Congratulations to Washington University senior (and SWI alum), Lauren Budde, who was named AVCA Division III National Player of the Week on October, 4, 2011. Lauren recently became the eighth student-athlete and first middle hitter in school history to reach 1,000 kills and digs in a career. Currently Wash U is undefeated and ranked #2 in the AVCA Div. III poll.
Congratulations to Illinois senior (and SWI alum), Michelle Bartsch, who was named Big Ten co-Player of the Week on September 26, 2011. Currently Illinois is undefeated and ranked #1 in the AVCA Div. I poll.
With wins over New Mexico Jrs 16 Russ, Northern Lights 16-B (18th), Colorado Performance 16 UA, and Golden Bear 16 Mizuno (13th), SWI 16 Smack finished the season 23rd in the 16 American Division at Junior Nationals. Congratulations!

Michelle Bartsch (Illinois, OPP, 6-4, 1, Maryville, Ill.)
Michelle Bartsch (Maryville, Ill.) was selected to the AVCA All-American Third-Team in 2010 after averaging 3.56 kills, 0.81 blocks and 2.09 digs per set for Illinois. She recorded 23 matches of double-digit kills and nine matches of double-doubles. Bartsch, who was a member of the 2009 U.S. Women’s National A2 Program, helped the 2006 U.S. Girls’ Youth Team and the 2008 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team to NORCECA Continental Championships. She also competed in the 2009 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship.
Carly Thomas (Missouri State, S, 5-11, 3, Swansea, Ill.)
Carly Thomas (Swansea, Ill.) split time as the starting setter as a freshman at Missouri State last fall, turning in 7.77 assists per set with 14 match starts. She added 2.03 digs per set as Missouri State held a 21-10 record in 2010. Thomas, who is also U.S. Women’s Junior National Team eligible, helped the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team win the gold medal at the 2009 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship where she earned Best Setter.
Congratulations to Maddy Hogan from SWI 18 Smack and Freeburg High School on her commitment to Missouri State.
Local tournament update . . . the 18s finished tied for 3rd in Power League behind CYC and Rockwood 18s. The 16s finished tied for 5th losing to the 18s in the quarter finals. 16 Smack is undefeated against 16s with a win over High P 16s and 2, 18s teams. This tied the highest finish of 16s teams in the tournament as CYC 16s also went out in the quarter finals. The 13s won their first local tournament.

Maddy Hogan, Jr., Freeburg (IL) – A flawless hitter, Hogan loves to work hard and has an attitude on the court of "access denied" when a hitter tries to lay a ball down on her back row. Amassing 507 digs and 576 passes on serve receive while displaying a wicked jump serve, Hogan was instrumental in the Midgets’ run to the Illinois 2A title. She was a First Team All Conference and First Team All Metro selection and Honorable Mention All State.

FIRST TEAM
Emma Goldschmidt, 6-0 RS, O’Fallon (IL) – Belleville News Democrat All Metro Large School Player of the Year and Second Team All State by the Champaign News-Gazette, Goldschmidt sparked O’Fallon’s great year with 367 kills and 419 digs. Academically, she boasts a 4.0 GPA and is ranked first in her class of 635 students. She is involved in Student Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Leadership Council and Sports Psychology Club. She has a full scholarship to play volleyball at St. Louis University next fall and plans on majoring in Business and Communication.
